Ranua Wildlife Park has 50 different arctic species. One of them, Lynx also got a Christmas surprise from the zoo.

“It is truly an impressive sight to see a polar bear munch a bright red Christmas apple”

The inhabitants of Ranua Zoo, located in Southern Lapland, have been extremely nice this year. All animals, including the reptiles, mammals, birds and fish have behaved according to the laws of Animal Kingdom, or at least as neat and nice as possible for their species. And everyone knows the result of such kindness and niceness: presents, presents, more presents!

– In Ranua Zoo, the Christmas of animals is created through various activities. We offer them a selection of traditional delicacies wrapped in Christmas boxes, which the animals must break and solve by themselves. When seeing them do that, it’s like watching a child, the CEO of Ranua Zoo, Tommi Hinno laughs.

Guided by the professional elf-guides, all guests of Ranua Zoo get to witness that child-like scenario, where the animals try their best to solve the opening mechanisms of their Christmas boxes. Some do it with their tooth, some with their nails or noses, some get help from a friend or random tools in hand.

– It is truly an impressive sight to see a polar bear munch a bright red Christmas apple or press a packet of salmon so hard that it eventually pops, Hinno mentions.

While the omnivorous polar bears get to savor the Christmas apples and salmon, are elks being served nice and colorful vegetable-fruit -coctails and birds get their traditional sheaves. Time to time also the Santa Claus himself pays a visit to the Zoo and helps feed the animals. And as the bell rings, the Finnish horse, who has filled his belly with mouth-watering Christmas treats, is ready to take the guests for a little ride.

– Our zoo is full of Christmas-related elements of which both, the animals and our guests can enjoy. The guests who stay at our hotels overnight are also being offered traditional Finnish Christmas lunch as well as a private meeting with the Santa. And at New Year we organize the fireworks, naturally far enough from the animals, Hinno adds.
